Chocolate Wheat Cake

All of us have sweet tooth in our family. We love sweets, biscuits, ice creams, cakes and everything sweet. My elder one Tharu wanted to make no bake cakes, so we tried cakes in cookers. This requires us to add salt or sand to the cooker for even heating. Though the cake turned out to be good, we ended up spoiling the cooker. So then she came upon steamed cake. So we gave it a try and never stopped making it. Whenever she made the cake, the whole house would smell so divinely and everyone would queue outside the kitchen to have a piece. When Tharu made this cake for the blog, one of my twins Haru wanted to eat it immediately after we took it out of the steamer. But she had to wait until we were done with the pics. But in the end, all of us got to enjoy

This chocolate wheat cake is good chocolaty treat. It is super soft and spongy. It does not need any out of the kitchen ingredients. You must be thinking that all things chocolaty is a sin, but you can call this cake a boon in disguise. Because this is a maida free, guilt free cake. I have made this cake with wheat and only wheat and also cut out the icing (that was an extra cup of sugar). So you can call it a healthy cake😉 Just 40 minutes of steaming and 10 minutes of cooling, and you can enjoy your cake. I have just dusted it with powdered sugar, but you can also add Choco chips or drizzle some chocolate syrup. Enjoy your guilt free cake!

 Preparation time:15 minutes|Cooking time:40 to 45 minutes

Ingredients:

Wheat- ¾ th cup
Sugar- ½ cup
Baking soda- ¼ tsp
Baking powder- 1 tsp
Egg-1
Milk- 1/2 cup
Oil- ¼ cup
Cocoa powder- 2 tblsp
Vanilla essence- ½ tsp
Powdered sugar(optional)- for dusting

Method:

1.      In a bowl mix together wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and baking soda.
2.      In one more separate bowl mix sugar, egg, oil, milk and vanilla essence together.
3.      Now pour the wet ingredients (from step 2) into the dry mixture (step 1). Mix everything well. Make sure there are no lumps.
4.      Grease a vessel with oil. Pour the mixture into that.
5.      Place this vessel into an idly cooker.
6.      Grease an aluminium foil with oil and place it on top of the vessel, so that the steam doesn’t enter the vessel. The oiled side should face down.
7.      Close the idly cooker and steam in medium flame for 40 to 45 minutes.
8.      Once done, insert a tooth pick in the middle. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked completely. Or else steam for another 5 to 10 minutes.
9.      Remove from the idly cooker and let it cool for 15 minutes.
10.   Now run a knife around the sides and invert it to a plate.
11.   Dust it with powdered sugar (optional, for decoration purpose).

Notes:

·        While mixing the cake batter, make sure there are no lumps.
·        If you are worried that the cake might stick to the vessel, you can use parchment paper to line the vessel.
·        Greasing the aluminium foil (used for covering) with oil is important. Or else the cake might get stuck to the foil, when it rises.
·        After steaming, make sure the cake is cooled for at least fifteen minutes. Else the cake will get stuck to the vessel.
·        I have just dusted the cake with powdered sugar.
·        One more topping idea- you can pour chocolate icing over the cake and sprinkle with choco chips.
