My second post for navratri- Chana dal sundal. This is yet
another healthy sundal, super easy to make and yummy too. Unlike the other
sundals which require overnight soaking, this sundal requires only one hour of
soaking. This also requires very less time to cook. Keep a watch on how long
you cook it for, as overcooking might make the sundal very soft. After all, don’t we all prefer crunchy?
This sundal recipe was given to me by my friend Anandhi,
though I have made minor changes to it. Though it is a navratri special dish,
it can also be a healthy evening snack and great short break. So less
ingredients and time to make, yet so many benefits. So try this out and tell me
how it turned out!
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Soaking time: 1hour
Cooking time: 15 to 20 minutes
Ingredients:
Chana dal(split chick pea)- 1 cup
Green chilies- 2 to 3
Curry leaves- a handful
Oil- 2 tblsp
Mustard seeds- ¼ tsp
Urad dal- ¼ tsp
asafoetida- a pinch
asafoetida- a pinch
Coconut- ¼ cup
Salt- as needed
Method:
1.
Soak chana dal overnight in water. Next day wash
and clean the dal.
2.
Cook the dal in a kadai adding salt and required
water. Take care not to overcook it
3.
Drain excess water if any. Keep aside.
4.
Heat oil in kadai. Add mustard seeds, urad
dal and asafoetida.
5.
When it splutters add curry leaves and slit
green chilies. Stir well.
6.
Then add the cooked chana dal and mix gently.
7.
Finely garnish with fresh grated coconut and
switch off flame.
Notes:
·
Add only minimum water to cook the dal as, when
we drain the excess water, the nutrients in the dal will also be drained away.
·
You can also pressure cook the dal but I would
recommend cooking in the pan. Pressure cook might mash the dal. Dal should be separate
and firm.
·
Increase the quantity of chilies if you need a
spicier version.
